This is the first in a series of three posts about activities I usually do on the first days of class. The main objective is to get students speaking and assess their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, as well as giving them an idea of what is expected of them for the rest of the year. Single men and women attend an event, usually in a bar or a club. During the event, they will have the opportunity to meet a series of potential partners. As the term speed-dating suggests, they only have three minutes to impress each person before rotating to the next. In the classroom we do the same but eliminate the romantic part! This technique works wonders on the first day as it breaks the ice just perfectly.
